Families can check “get a flu shot” off their “to do” list this weekend. The University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center (HSC) is holding a free drive-thru flu shot clinic Saturday at the UNM Family Medical Clinic, 2400 Tucker NE from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
The popular HSC drive-thru flu shot clinics for immunization against the seasonal flu are in their fifth year, said Luke Esquibel, Albuquerque-UNM Medical Reserve Corps Coordinator. There will be four mobile stations set up in the Family Practice Clinic parking lot, where UNM health sciences students will be helping to administer shots, he said.
“This is a great convenience for patients, especially those who have trouble walking or standing in line,” he said.“It is also a good learning experience for our students. It shows them that they can immunize a community without anyone ever leaving their car.”
In addition to the drive through clinics, UNM Hospitals is also hosting weekend flu shot clinics throughout the Albuquerque area. These vaccinations are free to everyone.
“More than 200,000 deaths occur annually due to the flu and we know that vaccinations are one of the most effective ways to avoid acquiring influenza. The CDC recommends vaccinations for everyone over the age of six months. It is particularly important for healthcare personnel to be vaccinated since they are in contact with vulnerable populations,” said Meghan Brett, M.D., UNM Hospitals Epidemiologist.
